If you look at the Sotomayor confirmation vote data, you can see that of the four largest states in America with significant Latino populations: Texas ,California, New York and Florida- only Texas opposed Sotomayor.
Both Senators John Cornyn and Kay Bailey Hutchison opposed the nomination of Sotomayor despite intense lobbying by Latino constituency groups. Their votes were disheartening to myself and many other Latino's in Texas.
And just when I was thinking that Washington was getting the wrong idea about Texas, I got an invitation from the White House to join President Obama and Justice Sotomayor at a reception celebrating her confirmation. I am honored to be invited to take such an intimate look at history.
This invitation shows that President Obama realizes that the appointment of Justice Sotomayor is important, historic and significant for Texas' largest growing Latino demographic, despite the nay votes from our Senators.
The event takes place Wednesday, August 12, 2009, at 9:30 am in the East Room of the White House. Stay tuned for an inside look at my visit and pictures from the event.
